How to apply for a passport in Pune, step by step

The same four stages apply whether you file yourself or through an agent. First-time applicant? Our page on fresh passport in Pune lists what we check before filing.

1

Collect your documents

Gather a proof of address and a proof of date of birth, plus any annexures your case needs. Your name, date of birth and address must read the same on every document.

2

Apply on Passport Seva

Register on the Passport Seva portal, choose fresh or re-issue and normal or Tatkal, and fill in the form. Spellings must match your documents exactly.

3

Pay and book a slot

Pay the government fee online and book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra. Slots are released in batches and fill quickly.

4

Visit, verification and delivery

Carry originals and self-attested copies to the appointment. After police verification the passport is printed and sent by Speed Post, and you can track it online.

What documents do you need for a passport in Pune?

Every application needs a proof of where you live and a proof of when you were born. Some documents, such as Aadhaar, can cover both. Your name and date of birth must read the same on everything you submit, including the online form.

Proof of address, any one

Aadhaar card Electricity, water or gas bill Bank passbook with photo Registered rent agreement Spouse’s passport

Proof of date of birth, any one

Birth certificate PAN card Aadhaar card Driving licence School leaving certificate Voter ID

For a non-ECR passport, also carry your Class 10 certificate or a higher qualification. Take originals and one set of self-attested photocopies to the appointment.

Born on or after 1 October 2023?

For a child born on or after 1 October 2023, a birth certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths or the municipal corporation is the only accepted proof of date of birth. In Pune that is usually the PMC or PCMC certificate.

Passport fees in 2026

Government fees, paid online to Passport Seva when you book. They are the same whether you apply yourself or through an agent.

Application Normal Tatkal
Fresh or re-issue, 36 pages, 10-year validity ₹1,500 ₹3,500
Fresh or re-issue, 60 pages, 10-year validity ₹2,000 ₹4,000
Minor under 15, 36 pages, 5 years or until 18 ₹1,000 ₹3,000
Lost, damaged or stolen passport, 36 pages ₹3,000 ₹5,000

Check the fee before you pay

Fees are set by the Ministry of External Affairs and listed on the Passport Seva portal, whose fee calculator shows the exact amount for your case. An agent’s service charge is separate; we quote ours before we start.

Normal or Tatkal: which should you choose?

Tatkal is the same application with a higher fee and faster processing. It suits people with a fixed travel date. If you are not in a hurry, the normal route costs less and works well.

Choose normal if you have no fixed travel date in the next couple of months
Choose Tatkal for a booked visa interview, a joining date abroad or a family emergency
Tatkal can need additional identity documents, so check the list before paying the higher fee

How police verification works in Pune

For most fresh passports, police verification happens after your appointment at the Passport Seva Kendra. Depending on your address it is done by Pune City Police or Pimpri-Chinchwad Police. An officer either visits your address or asks you to come to the local police station with your original documents.

Keep the originals you submitted ready until verification is closed
Stay reachable on the phone number given in your application
Be ready to answer questions about your address and how long you have lived there
Most delays come from an address mismatch or an applicant who cannot be reached

Renewals with no change in details often need no fresh verification, but the Regional Passport Office can ask for it in any case.

Renewal, children, lost passports and name changes

These cases follow the same four stages, with extra documents. Each has its own page with the details.

Passport renewal

You can apply for re-issue before or after your passport expires. Many travellers renew in the last year of validity, since some countries want six months left on arrival. Read more about passport renewal in Pune.

Children and newborns

A child’s application needs a birth certificate and the consent of both parents, usually through an annexure. See our guide to a minor passport in Pune.

Lost or damaged passport

Report a lost passport to the police first and keep a copy of the report. The re-issue fee is higher than a normal renewal. We explain the steps for lost passport re-issue in Pune.

Name or detail changes

A name change after marriage, or a correction to your date of birth or address, is filed as a re-issue with supporting proof. See passport name change in Pune.

Five mistakes that delay passport applications in Pune

In our experience, most held-up files come down to one of these.

A name spelled differently on Aadhaar, PAN and the school certificate
A present address on the form that does not match the address proof
Filing the wrong category, such as fresh instead of re-issue
Missing annexures for minors, or for an address not in the applicant’s name
Not being reachable when the police come for verification

It is far easier to fix these before the appointment than after it. Contact us and we will check your documents before you book.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about getting a passport in Pune.

How long does it take to get a passport in Pune?

It depends on the category and on police verification. Normal applications commonly take a few weeks from the appointment. Tatkal is faster and is often dispatched within days once the Regional Passport Office accepts the case. Nobody, including an agent, can guarantee a date.

Can I apply for a passport in Pune without an agent?

Yes. Anyone can apply directly on the Passport Seva portal. People use an agent to avoid mistakes in the form and documents, to find a suitable appointment, and to have someone to call if the file is held up.

Where is the passport office in Pune?

Applications from Pune are handled by the Regional Passport Office, Pune. Your in-person appointment is at a Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra, which you choose when you book.

Is Aadhaar enough to apply for a passport?

For most adults, Aadhaar can serve as both proof of address and proof of date of birth. A child born on or after 1 October 2023 needs a birth certificate, and a non-ECR passport also needs your Class 10 certificate or a higher qualification.

Do I need to bring passport photos?

No. Your photograph and fingerprints are taken at the Passport Seva Kendra during the appointment.

What is the Tatkal passport fee?

₹3,500 for a 36-page adult passport and ₹4,000 for 60 pages, paid online to Passport Seva. For a child under 15 it is ₹3,000.

Is police verification needed for passport renewal?

Not always. Where your details have not changed, many re-issues are cleared without fresh verification. The Regional Passport Office can still order it, and it is standard for fresh passports.

How much does a passport agent in Pune charge?

Service charges vary by agent and by case. We quote a fixed service charge upfront, separately from the government fee, once we have seen your documents.
